I want to be careful here, because this town has a bad habit with quarterbacks. We spent twenty years watching the greatest to ever do it and then we spent four years grading every kid who followed against a standard nobody on earth could meet. That is not analysis, that is grief. And it made a lot of very smart people in this market unable to say a simple sentence out loud: DRAKE MAYE IS GOOD.

Watch how he plays on second and long, which is where quarterbacks get exposed. He is not bailing out of clean pockets anymore. He is climbing the pocket instead of drifting backward, which is the single most reliable tell that a young quarterback has stopped playing scared. He is throwing the ball away when the play is dead — a skill nobody appreciates until you have watched a decade of guys who could not do it. And when he does extend a play with his legs, it is on his terms, not out of panic.

Every year around Thanksgiving somebody on national television explains that weather does not matter in modern football because both teams play in it. That is technically true and completely useless. Both teams play in it. Only one team practiced in it every Wednesday since September. Only one team has a play-caller who knows exactly what his own football does in a twenty-mile-an-hour crosswind coming across an open bowl in Foxborough.

The specific advantage is not the temperature, it is the passing tree. A cold, wet ball changes the deep out, the back-shoulder throw and the seam route more than it changes anything on the ground. Warm-weather offenses come in here in December still calling the same route concepts they lived on in October and then spend the second half discovering they cannot complete them. That is not luck. That is a home field.

I love a sack as much as anybody in this city. It is the most fun individual play in football. But if you want to know whether a defense is actually good, do not start with the sack total. Start with what happens on third down and in the red zone, because those two numbers are where games are actually decided and they are the two numbers that separate a defense that looks good on a Monday morning highlight reel from one that wins in January.

The Patriots front has been built with that in mind. GABE JACAS is not a one-move edge who disappears when a tackle sets deep — he plays with his hands and he plays the run, which means the defense does not have to substitute him out on second and short and telegraph what is coming. That kind of two-way edge is worth more to a coordinator than a specialist with a bigger number next to his name.
